Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. This annual celebration on June 19th serves as a reminder of the progress and ongoing struggle for racial justice in America. 

Brands have an opportunity to show their support for the Black community and raise awareness about this important topic. However, it's essential to approach this celebration with sensitivity and respect and not use it as a commercial opportunity. 


What is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, is an incredibly important holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. 

June 19, 1865, is the date when General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that all slaves were free. This happened two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by President Abraham Lincoln.

Juneteenth is a day of celebration, freedom, education, and cultural appreciation. Today, Juneteenth is recognized as a federal holiday.

✔️Use your platform to promote Black-owned businesses and organizations.
✔️Share resources and educational materials that promote understanding and allyship.
✔️Encourage your followers to take action by supporting relevant causes and initiatives.
✔️Celebrate African American culture and history in a respectful and thoughtful manner.
❌ Use Juneteenth as a marketing ploy or to sell products.
❌Appropriate African American culture or use stereotypes for humor or promotion.
❌Speak over Black voices or take credit for Black initiatives.
❌Use Juneteenth as an empty gesture without taking concrete action to support the Black community.
❌Use improper hashtags that are not related to Juneteenth or the Black community.
❌Try to profit from or exploit the Juneteenth holiday in any way.


Juneteenth Social Media Post Examples

In recent years, brands have begun to recognize Juneteenth as a way to show their support for the Black community. However, it’s important to remember that Juneteenth is not a commercial opportunity. If you’re looking for ideas on what to post for Juneteenth, here are 10 ideas:


1. Share the history of Juneteenth and why it’s important


Coca-Cola created a Twitter thread with five key things to know about Juneteenth. Coca-Cola is raising awareness and understanding of Black history and culture by educating their followers about Juneteenth.

2. Highlight the contributions of Black leaders, experts, and activists who have made a difference in your industry


NASA celebrated Juneteenth by launching a documentary called "The Color of Space," which highlights the achievements of Black NASA astronauts. The documentary features the inspiring stories of these astronauts as they aim to break barriers and reach new heights. 


3. Ask your employees to be involved and share their thoughts 


Delta Juneteenth post showcases murals commissioned by Black artists that reflected the history, resilience, and achievement of the Black community. Through a Twitter thread, Delta employees shared photos of the murals and a sentence explaining what the mural means to them.


4. Partner with Black-owned businesses, creators, or artists to promote their work and initiatives


Disney+ collaborated with two Black artists, Nikkolas Smith, and Khia Ancalade, to showcase their Disney-inspired creations that honor Black humanity. Disney+'s Juneteenth Instagram post is amplifying black voices and taking steps toward greater representation and diversity in the entertainment industry.


5. Ask influential figures in your industry or community what Juneteenth means to them


The NBA honored Juneteenth by asking different players what the day means to them. They shared the player's responses in different videos and photos. The NBA's Juneteenth social post aimed to bring awareness and recognition to Juneteenth's historical significance.


6. Share quotes and inspiring messages from Black leaders, thinkers, and artists.


Instagram celebrated Juneteenth by sharing a quote from @zysaidso (Zyahna Bryant).  In the post, Bryant reflects on what freedom means to her and emphasizes the importance of rest and community care. The post includes a powerful photo of Bryant that highlights her message of collective liberation and comprehensive freedom.


7. Host a virtual event or panel discussion on topics related to Black history and culture.


Revlon celebrated Juneteenth by hosting a virtual event to raise awareness about Black history and culture. They collaborated with four Black influencers, industry leaders, and changemakers who shared their Juneteenth experiences with the beauty community. By providing a platform for these voices, Revlon showed their support for the Black community.


8. Share resources and educational materials that promote understanding and allyship. 


Ben & Jerry's marked Juneteenth by sharing a resource guide for their followers. The guide provides resources and educational materials that promote understanding and allyship in the ongoing fight against systemic racism. The ice cream company used their social channels to encourage their followers to learn more about Black history and culture. 


9. Use your platform to amplify the voices and perspectives of Black creators and influencers. 


Apple Music celebrated Juneteenth by launching "Freedom Songs," a curated playlist featuring exclusive songs from Black artists. The playlist highlights the invaluable legacy of Black music and gives Black artists a platform to promote their work. In addition to celebrating Juneteenth, the playlist also explores the history and cultural significance of Black music. Apple Music is celebrating Black artists and promoting diversity in the music industry by showcasing their work and elevating their voices.


10. Create social media graphics and visuals that celebrate Black culture and history


Proctor & Gamble shared a post featuring the colors of Juneteenth and highlighting their ongoing commitment to advancing equity and driving impact. The post includes a link to their blog, where they share more about how they are deepening existing programs.

Remember, the goal of celebrating Juneteenth on social media is to show your support for the Black community and raise awareness. Take the time to listen, learn, and engage with your community. And your brand can make a meaningful impact and help to create a more inclusive society for all.
